My today’s recipe is sorshe mach – a tasty shorpunti fish dish made with mustard seeds paste. It is a gravy based dish, very easy to prepare and requires a few ingredients. You can use any kind of small fish instead of shorpunti fish

Cooking time – 30 minutes. Serve – 4
Ingredients –
1.Shorpunti fish – 250 grams.
2.Mustard seeds – 2 tbsp.
3.Green chilly – 4
4.Nigella seeds/Kalonji – 1/2 tsp.
5.Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp.
6.Tomato puree – 1 tbsp.
7.Salt to taste.
8.Mustard oil – 50 grams.
9.Chopped coriander leaves – 2 tbsp.
10.Slit green chilly – 2 (for garnishing)
Method –
1.Wash the fish, rub with 1/2 tsp of salt and a pinch of turmeric, keep aside until use. Adding 1/4 cups of water grind mustard seeds and green chilly into a smooth paste. Add turmeric powder and tomato puree with the ground paste, mix well.
2.Heat oil in a frying pan,when hot reduce the heat. Fry the fish till light brown on both sides. Remove from oil, keep aside.
3.In the remaining oil add nigella seeds, stir fry for few seconds. Add the masala mix, saute for 3-4 minutes. Add 1-11/2 cups of water and salt, let it bring to boil. Add fish and cover the pan. Simmer for 7-8 minutes on medium flame with stirring occasionally (or till the gravy thickens)
Remove pan from heat, mix coriander leaves,cover the pan and give 10 minutes standing time.
Garnish with green chilly and serve with steamed rice.
