Today I am sharing with you a delicious Hilsha fish recipe—-it is Kumro Illish. It is a wonderful recipe of Hilsha fish, very quick and easy to prepare and tastes awesome. It is a traditional Bengali recipe and very popular in West Bengal and Bangladesh. It goes well with only plain rice.
Cooking time – 30 minutes. Serve – 4
Ingredients –
- Fish – 4 pieces.
- Pumpkin – 150 grams (cut into big pieces)
- Nigella seeds (kalojeera) – 1/2 tsp.
- Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp.
- Red chilly powder – 1/4 tsp.
- Cumin powder – 1/2 tsp.
- salt to taste.
- oil – 1/2 cup.
- Slit green chilly – 4
Instructions –
Wash the fish, marinate with 1/2 tsp.of salt and a pinch of turmeric powder. Keep aside until use. By using 1/2 cup of water grind turmeric,chilly and cumin powder into a smooth paste. Keep aside.
Heat oil in a frying pan, fry the fish pieces lightly on both sides Take out from oil,keep aside. Add kalojeera in the remaining oil, fry for 30 seconds. Add the pumpkin pieces, fry for 1 minute. Add the masala paste, saute on slow flame till oil separates. Add 2 cups of water, allow it to boil. Add the fried fish, salt and slit green chilly. Cover the pan, cook till the gravy thickens. Remove pan from the heat, give 10 minutes standing time.
Delicious Bengali Kumro Illish is ready, serve with steamed rice. ENJOY.
