Today we are making a wonderful fish curry dish – Illish Brinjal Gravy. It is a traditional Bengali fish gravy preparation made with Hilsha fish, eggplant and mustard seeds paste.The dish is very tasty and very quick and easy to make.
Cooking time – 30 minutes. Serve – 4
Ingredients –
1.Hilsha fish – 4 pieces.
2.Eggplant (small) – 1 (cut into small pieces)
3.Mustard seeds – 2 tbsp.
4.Nigella seeds/kalonji – 1/2 tsp.
5.Green chilly – 2
6.Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp.
7.Mustard oil – 4 tbsp.
8.Salt to taste.
9.Slit green chilly – 2 (for garnishing)
Method –
1.Wash the fish and marinate with 1/2 tsp.of salt and a pinch of turmeric powder, keep aside until use. Soak the brinjal in water for 15-20 minutes. Grind mustard seeds into a paste (with green chilly,1/2 tsp.of salt and 1/2 cup of water.)
2.Heat oil in a frying pan,when hot reduce the heat. Fry the fish till light brown on both sides.Remove from the oil,keep aside.
3.In the remaining oil add nigella seeds (kalojeera), stir fry for few seconds.Add brinjal,fry for 4-5 minutes. Add mustard seeds paste and turmeric, saute for 3-4 minutes. Add 1-11/2 cups of water and salt, let it bring to boil. Add the fish and cook till the gravy thickens.
4.Remove pan from heat,cover and give 10 minutes standing time. Garnish with slit green chilly and serve with steamed rice.
