Today I am sharing with you a delicious fish gravy recipe made with Amodi fish.It is a traditional Bengali recipe and very popular throughout Bengal. I made the dish with eggplant (Begun). The dish is very simple and takes few minutes to prepare.
Cooking time – 35 minutes. Serve – 4.
Ingredients –
1.Amodi fish – 250 grams.
2.Eggplant – 1 (cut into long pieces)
3.Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp.
4.Bay leaves – 2.
5.Tomato (large) – 1 (chopped)
6.Onion (large) –1 (chopped)
7.Ginger paste – 1/2 tsp.
8.Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp.
9.Chilly powder – 1/2 tsp.
10.Cumin powder – 1/2 tsp.
11.Coriander powder – 1/2 tsp.
12.Salt to taste.
13.Slit green chilly – 4.
14.Chopped coriander leaves – 4 tbsp.
15.Oil – 1/2 cup.
Method –
1.Clean and wash the fish and marinate with 1/4 tsp.of salt and a pinch of turmeric powder, keep aside until use. Soak Eggplant in water for 10 minutes and drain. Take a bowl,add ginger paste, 1/2 cup of water and all the masala powders (chilly,cumin,coriander,turmeric) and mix well. Keep the masala mix aside.
2.Heat oil in a frying pan. Group fishes into 4 batches. Fry each batch till light brown on both sides. Take out from the oil,keep aside. Add Eggplant pieces in the remaining oil and fry till light brown. Take out from the oil,keep aside.
3.Add cumin seeds and bay leaves in the remaining oil. If needed add little oil. When the cumin seeds look brown, add onion and fry till light brown. Add tomato,saute for 1 minute. Add the masala mix,saute till oil separates (in slow heat). Add 11/2 to 2 cups of water and salt, let it bring to boil. Add Fish,Eggplant and slit green chilly and cook on medium heat until there is no liquid left (stir gently). Remove pan from the heat,mix coriander leaves, cover the pan and give 10 minutes standing time.Delicious Amodi Fish Gravy is ready,serve with steamed Rice.
