Today I am sharing with you a delicious fish gravy recipe made with Magur Mach (Cat Fish). It is a traditional Bengali recipe. It is a simple dish, healthy and very tasty to eat. The process of making the dish is very easy and with few ingredients.

Ingredients –
1.Magur Mach – 1 (large size)
2.Tomato – 1 (chopped)
3.Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp.
4.Bay leaves – 2
5.Ginger paste – 1/2 tsp.
6.Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp.
7.Red chilly powder – 1/2 tsp.
8.Cumin powder – 1/2 tsp.
9.Salt to taste.
10 Oil – 5 tsp.
11.Garam masala powder – 1/4 tsp.(optional)
Method –
1.Clean the fish and scrub lightly with salt to remove the slime. Or you can rub the fish on rough surface to remove the slime. Wash the fish well and cut into four pieces. Marinate the fish with 1/4 tsp.of salt and a pinch of turmeric powder. Keep aside until use. Grind tomato to a paste. to this add ginger paste, turmeric-chilly-cumin powders and 1/2 cup of water. Keep the masala mix aside.
2.Heat oil in a frying pan,when hot reduce the heat. Add the fish pieces, cover the frying pan and fry the fish lightly on both sides. Take out from the oil, keep aide.
3.Add cumin seeds in the remaining oil (add 2 tbsp.of oil if needed).When the cumin looks brown add bay laves, stir fry for 20 seconds. Add the masala mix,saute until the raw smell of the masala goes off. If needed add little water and saute for another few minutes. When oil separates add 2 cups of water, let it bring to boil. Add the fried fish pieces and salt, cover the pan and cook for 7 to 8 minutes on medium heat (stir in between).
4.When the gravy starts thickening remove the pan from the heat, add garam masala powder and mix well. Cover the pan and give 10 minutes standing time. Healthy and tasty Magur Macher Jhol is ready, serve with hot plain Rice.
